Vine Cottage

Ricksons Lane, West Horsley

A 16th Century cottage, extended in the 17th Century and refaced with brick in 1711.

Vine Cottage is a Grade II listed medieval timber-framed cottage believed to date from the 16th Century, with an extension made in the 17th Century using brick. External brick walls were added in 1711. A further matching bay was also added to the house in 1920 together with a porch opposite the chimney stack.

Features of interest in the listing citation include an open fireplace, wood panelling, plank doors, and brick and timber fireplaces.

The house is located on the edge of what was once Tintalow Green, the tethering green where in medieval times villagers were involved in the local weaving industry. It is adjacent to  the Barley Mow public house which dates from the same era. During WW2 a German bomb which toppled the chimney of the Barley Mow pub also caused damaged to the side of Vine Cottage.
