These side-by-side cottages were built by Lord Lovelace in the 1860’s, although at slightly different times.
Tower Cottage is the left-hand building which dates from 1862, as the brick decoration testifies, although it is thought part of this surviving building may have been constructed earlier.
Red Rose Cottage is the right-hand building of the pair and dates from 1867. Originally these houses were known collectively as ‘The Red Roses Cottages’, a name which reflects the string course of roses in their decorative brickwork.
Both houses replaced medieval cottages at this location which had served as the old village forge and carpenter’s shop. Unusually, the right-hand exterior wall of Red Rose Cottage abuts directly against the larger Lovelace house next door, Sartor Re Sartus, which was constructed a year earlier.
A Grade II listing applies to the two cottages collectively. Both have seen rear extensions constructed in recent years.
