Penyemead Lodge

One of Lord Lovelace earliest buildings in East Horsley originally named Laundry Cottage.

Built in 1851 this large house is believed to be the second oldest of the surviving Lovelace buildings in East Horsley. Originally known as Laundry Cottage, this lodge was used for all of the washing of the Horsley Towers estate. Indeed, there are reports that Lord Lovelace had the laundry from his London house also sent here to be washed.

Now a private residence, this building has less decorative features than some later Lovelace structures, although the flint facings, arched windows and red-brick surrounds are all to be seen here.

Unusually this building is neither listed, nor locally-listed, which may potentially explain why the exterior of the building seems to have a newer-looking appearance than other Lovelace structures in East Horsley, which have to comply with the restrictions of listed building consent.

LOCATION:  Beside the cross-roads where Pennymead Drive, Lynx Hill and Pine Way intersect.
