A 19th Century cottage built by Lord Lovelace along his private road linking Ockham Park with Horsley Towers.
This Grade II listed lodge was built in 1874 by Lord Lovelace along the route of a 4-mile private drive which linked his original family home at Ockham Park with his newly acquired property of Horsley Towers. Some years later this route would also include a private bridge over the recently constructed railway line.
Like other lodges and gatehouses across the Lovelace estate, this building of flint and terracotta brick is richly decorated with coats of arms and two distinctive string courses, one displaying a row of bugles, the other in a guilloche pattern. There are also several distinctive brickwork designs portraying a balustrade pattern inset into the wall.
Today this house is located beside The Drift, a country lane linking Ockham Road North with Forest Road. Those motorists forced to wait at this narrow pinch point on The Drift may enjoy a close-up view of fine 19th Century decorative brickwork. However, anyone choosing to walk along The Drift to see this building should note that there are no footways along the length of this busy country lane.
LOCATION: The southern side of The Drift around 0.3km from the Ockham Road North junction.
