A locally-listed Chown bungalow from 1935 with distinctive thatched features
Autumn Cottage in Pennymead Drive was built in 1935 by local developer, Frank Chown, the man responsible for pioneering residential development in East Horsley following his acquisition of a large parcel of land from the former Lovelace estate in 1927. All of Chown’s houses were individually designed in an ‘arts & crafts’ style with a varied template of characteristic features being offered to purchasers.
Autumn Cottage displays many of Frank Chown’s particular design features including a thatch roof, extensive use of oak for flooring, panels and beams, original leaded windows and eye-brow features around the first-floor windows.
This house originally comprised three bedrooms but was extended and modernised in 2011, although the majority of the main footprint remains as it was originally built. Autumn Cottage is a locally-listed building.
For more information about Frank Chown and his work see the Local History section of the Horsley Heritage website at www.horsleyheritage.info.
